Celebrating Obama
Forgive the light posting of late. Between traveling a great deal lately and obsessing about the historic American presidential election there simply has been little time. Hopefully it is not too untoward to declare that I celebrate Barack Obama’s epochal victory much as Nelson Mandela does.

Let’s take a breath and celebrate this momentous occasion, who would have thought it possible in our life time. Congratulations President Elect Obama. Now without meaning to put a dampener on this historic event, I am a little worried about what this really means for Africa, please don’t be fooled into thinking that this will in some way favour the continent because The President Elect has a black face and has a direct ancestral link to Kenya. If anything this should put Africa on her toes and make her more focused on improving all levels of developments hindering Africa as a whole.

Thanks for the comment, and I absolutely agree. Obama’s policies — toward Africa or anything else — still must be assessed, and praised or criticized, on their merits and not because of the symbolic and real importance of the fact of his election.
