Free Press in Zambia

As a follow-up to yesterday’s post on press freedom I would encourage you to read  Guy Berger’s column, “Role Models for a Free Press,” in the Mail & Guardian. A free and open media does not just happen naturally, as events across the globe sadly show on a regular basis and as Berger reveals in this celebration of Zambian journalists.

I worked in Zambia for a year and a half a little while ago and I was presently surprised by the press freedoms they have. While Zambia has a lot of economic trouble, and has a long way to go to improve in that area, their democracy seems solid, and the press freedom they have is a cornerstone of that freedom.

    Bruce –
Thanks so much for reading and for weighing in. I appreciate your insights. I think that freedom of the press is such a vital issue for any country’s democratic stability, much moreso, perhaps, than most people recognize.
